Tangail: Two people were killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Tangail in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased are Akbar Hossain, a member of Baghail union council of Sadar upazila, and Manu Mia, a resident of Moisha village.
RAB officials claimed the deceased were members of an outlawed Purba Bangla Communist Party.

RAB also said four RAB members including sub-inspector Monirul Islam were also received bullets during the gunfight.

Tangail RAB Company Commander Muhammad Mohiuddin Faruque said they had information that a group of members of the outlawed party were staying in the area for a programme, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there at about 2:00 am.

Sensing the presence of RAB members, the party members opened fire on the elite force forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight at about 3:15am and left two of the outlawed members died on the spot.

The injured SI and three members of the extremist party were taken to Tangail Medical College Hospital.

SI Monirul Islam was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka as his conditions deteriorated on Wednesday morning.

RAB members also recovered one foreign-made pistol, one shutter gun, two bullets and some bullet shells from the scene.

The bodies were kept at Tangail Medical College Hospital morgue.
