Dhaka: The proposed Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Act needs several amendments before it gets final approval in Parliament, said transport experts in a meeting with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Road Transport and Bridges Ministry on Saturday.

Road Safety Multi-Stockholder Committee placed four suggestions: the section on road accident should be more precise, non-motorised vehicles should be accepted as transport vehicles with keeping the economic development in focus, keeping provision for outsourcing under Public-Private Partnership and strengthening BRTA.  

Former advisor to caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman on behalf of the Bangladesh Road Safety Multi-Stockholder Committee placed the recommendations to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee chairman Ekabbar Hossain, state minister for food Nuruzzaman Ahmed, lawmaker Nazmul Haque Pradhan, BRTA secretary and director (operation) Muhammad Shawkat Ali, Bangladesh Bus-Truck Owners’ Association chairman Faruk Talukder Sohel, Bangladesh Society for Emergency Medicine president Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation organising secretary Mokhlesur Rahman, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Association leader Osman Goni, BRAC Advocacy for Social Change Project coordinator Sadrul Hasan Majumdar, among others, were present at the programme organised by BRAC.

The programme was coordinated by BRAC Advocacy for Social Change director KAM Morshed.

Ekabbar Hossain said the parliamentary committee will recommend the suggestions while it would scrutinise the bill.
