Nilphamari: A court in Nilphamari on Wednesday convicted three people and sentenced them to life term jail for killing a day labourer in the district in 2008.

The convicts are Rashidul Islam Chowdhury, 30, Safi Chowdhury, 50, and Saju Chowdhury, 34, hailing from Ronochandi Bazar village in Kishoreganj upazila of the district.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.

According to prosecution, Bishadu Mahamud, a day labourer of the area took the lease of a piece of land from another villager and started cultivation there.

On 14 March 2008, Rashidul, Saju and Safi along with others tried to occupy the land forcefully.

As Bishadu Mahamud tried to resist them, they beat up Bishadu indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot.

Halima Begum, wife of the deceased, filed a case with Kishoreganj Police Station against five people including Rashidul, Saju and Safi in the day.

After examining all the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mahbubul Alam handed down the verdict.
