Narayanganj: A Narayanganj court on Friday sent Nur Hossain — the main accused in the notorious Narayanganj seven-murder case — to jail, after showing him arrested in two cases filed over the abduction and killing of seven people in 2014.

Earlier in the day, Nur Hossain was produced before Narayanganj judicial magistrate’s court with strict security measures at about 2:30pm.

However, authorities beefed up security at the court premises centring Nur Hossain’s presence in court.

A huge number of law enforcers were deployed around the court area.

Earlier, Indian Border Security Force (BSF) handed Nur Hossain over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at about 11:30pm on Thursday. BGB Major Liakat Hossain received Nur, who was on the run since the murder had been revealed in April last year.

Nur Hossain was taken to RAB 1 office in capital’s Uttara in the early hours of Friday. Later, he was shifted to police lines of Gabtali in Fatulla, Narayanganj at about 8:15am, said RAB Media Wing Director Lt Col Mufti Mahmud Khan.

Earlier Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Khandker Mohid Uddin said that India might handover Nur Hossain to Bangladesh tonight through Benapole port.

Journalists started to gather at Benapole port from Thursday evening when the news of Nur’s repatriation came to different electronic and online media.

Earlier on 16 October, an Indian court ordered extradition of Nur Hossain to Bangladesh by 15 December.

Acting District and Sessions Judge of the North 24 Parganas district at Barasat in West Bengal passed the order withdrawing the case against him under Section 14 of the Indian Foreigners Act.

However, the court ordered continuation of the case against two other accused—Khan Sumon and Wahiduzzaman—who were arrested along with Nur Hossain from an apartment in Kolkata on 14 June 2014.

On 27 April 2014, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of Narayanganj. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to Dhaka.

Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on 30 April in the same year. The following day, the body of Jahangir, car driver of Nazrul Islam, was also recovered from the river.

Nur Hossain, a Narayanganj city Awami League leader and also a councillor, and his associates remained absconding following the abduction and killing of the seven people.

Shahidul Islam alias Shahid chairman, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, alleged that some officials of elite force Rab killed Nazrul Islam in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain.
