Gazipur: A court in Gazipur on Monday sentenced eleven people to death for killing a Juba League leader at Kapasia upazila in Gazipur in 2003.

The condemned convicts are Faruque Hossain, Belayet Hossain Beltu, Abdus Alim, Ataur Rahman, Farhad Hossain, Joynal Abedin, Joj Miah, Abdul Halim, Al Amin, Mahbubur Rahman Ripon, and Jewel.

The convicts were activists of BNP, Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal.

Among them, Abdul Alim, Joj Miah, Al Amin, Ripon, and Jewel were tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, Jalal Sarker, 32, Juba League Kapasia upazila unit president, was hacked to death near Ballkhela Bazar area of the upazila on 17 August 2003 following political rivalry.

Victim’s brother Milon Sarkar filed a case with Kapasia Police Station in connection with the murder on 18 August 2003.

After examining the records and witnesses, Judge of additional district judge court-1 Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict.
