Municipal poll battle looms between families

Pabna: Four members of two families are facing off in the upcoming municipal election of Shujanagar municipality in Pabna.
Among the contestants two brothers are contesting the electoral battle from Awami League and as an independent contender, while two cousins are competing from BNP.
The candidates are Shujanagar municipal Awami League general secretary Shahinuzzaman Shahin, and his elder brother, former joint convenor of upazila Shecchwashebak League Raju Ahmed; both of them are sons of upazila council chairman, who is also the upazila Awami League president, Abul Kashem.
Other contestants are upazila BNP president Azam Ali Biswas and his cousin, municipality BNP general secretary and former mayor Kamal Hossain Biswas.
Four candidates started their electoral campaign at nine wards of the municipality before the election schedule was announced.
They began electioneering in full swing as the election schedule was declared on 24 November.
Among the canvasing, Awami League aspirant Shahinuzzaman Shahin’s campaign is noticeable. He is exercising public relations and lobbying to high commands for achieving party’s nomination.
His brother, Raju Ahmed, an individual candidate, has also seen in public relations endeavours.
On the other hand the BNP-back cousins, Azam Ali Biswas and Kamal Hossain Biswas, emphasised on party’s nomination rather than election campaign.
The voters of Shujanagar municipality are excitedly looking forward for the election battle between the families. Then again, they are yet to know whether four of the candidates will finally stand for the election or not.
