Oishee appeals against death penalty

Dhaka: Oishee Rahman filed appeal petition against the death penalty handed to her for killing her parents — special branch inspector Mahfuzur Rahman, his wife Swapna Rahman.
Oishee filed the appeal plea with the concerned division of the High Court on Sunday afternoon, says Oishee’s counsel Masud Rana.
On 12 November 2015, Oishee Rahman was sentenced to death for killing her parents.
The court also acquitted Oishee’s friend Asaduzzaman Jony and handed over two years of imprisonment and imposed Tk 5,000 fine to the other accused, Mizanur Rahman Rony.
Earlier, on 4 November Judge Syed Ahmed of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 fixed 12 November for delivering the judgment, in presence of three accused in the case- the couple’s daughter Oishee Rahman, her friends Mizanur Rahman Rony and Asaduzzaman Johny.
Meanwhile, Oishee’s counsel Faruk Ahmed said the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against his client and the witnesses who had testified earlier didn’t identify Oishee as killer.
The trial in the case over the killing of the couple started on 8 July, 2014, through recording depositions of the witnesses.
A total of 39 witnesses, out of 57, gave their depositions before the tribunal.
On 16 August, 2013, police recovered the bodies of SB Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman from their Chamelibagh residence in the capital.
Later, Oishee surrendered to the police confessing to her involvement in the killing.
Police also arrested her two friends Asaduzzaman and Mizanur and domestic help of their house Khadiza Akhter Sumi in connection with the murder.
Mahfuzur’s brother Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel filed a case with Paltan Police Station on 17 August.
Abul Khayer, inspector of Detective Branch of Police, submitted two separate charge-sheets—one against Oishee and her two friends on 9 March, 2014, and the other against Sumi as she was then a juvenile.
