Dhaka: The cabinet approved in principle the drafts of The Gazipur Metropolitan Police Law and The Rangpur Metropolitan Police Law aimed at providing more legal and police services to the people of the two newly-constituted metropolitan cities.

The approval came in the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet on Monday morning held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division Bijay Bhattacharya said the draft laws were endorsed in principle subject to the vetting of the Law Ministry.

He said the draft laws have been framed in the light of the Metropolitan Police Acts of other metropolitan cities of the country as those (laws) are necessary to ensure better legal and police services for the people of metropolitan cities.

After a detailed discussion, he said, the cabinet gave some observations on the proposed draft laws and directed the authorities concerned to finalize those after completing necessary legal activities to this end.

Ministers, state ministers concerned attended the meeting, while secretaries concerned were present.
