Gazipur: Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) has been declared closed for indefinite period and the students have been asked to vacate halls after a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Monday.

DUET director (student welfare) Mohammad Kamruzzaman said academic activities have been closed and examinations have been postponed to avoid any untoward situation.

Male students were asked to vacate halls by 6:00pm on Monday while the female students by 8:00am on Tuesday. But the administrative activities of the university will continue, he added.

Witnesses said the clash took place between the supporters of BCL DUET unit president Nasir Uddin and general secretary Rezaur Rahman. At least 12 activists were injured during the clash.

Nasir Uddin said a Shibir activist came back to a hall of the university with the support of Rezaur Rahman. When the students went to interrogate the Shibir activist, they were attacked by their rival group.

Denying the claim Rezaur said the said Shibir activist was actually a BCL activist. He said Nasir’s supporters were just spreading the Shibir rumour about that activist for maligning him politically.

The injured students were admitted to the University hospital, Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Being informed of the clash, Joydebpur police took position on the campus with water cannon and riot cars.
