20 hurt as JUST students, villagers clash

Benapole: At least 20 people were injured as a clash took place between students of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) and people of a village adjacent to the campus on Thursday night over beating an employee of the university.

Students’ sources said Sharif, bother of Badal, an employee of the university, had teased a female second-year student a few days ago.

Later the student informed the matter to her classmates.

Sharif beat a student of Microbiology department as the classmates of the female student protested her harassment.

As a sequel, the students later beat Badal.

Badal called the villagers in over phone and they attacked a student mess and beat its inmates, leaving 20 of them injured.

Of them, two with critical injuries, were admitted to hospital.

Kotwali police officer-in-charge Shikdar Akkash Ali said on information, police rushed to the campus and brought the situation under control.

Vice-chancellor of the university Abdus Sattar said the clash ensued between the students and villagers.

The situation on the campus was normal and law enforcers remained deployed to fend off any further trouble, reports UNB.
