Joypurhat: Three people including two leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir were injured in a reported gunfight with police at Awlai in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat early on Friday.

The injured are Abu Jar Gifari, president of the district unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, its general secretary Omar Ali and Jamaat activist Al Amin.

The Panchbibi police said a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive on Thursday arrested the Shibir district president and general secretary along with two firearms, 21 crude bombs and six hand bombs from separate places of the district.

Later the elite force handed them over to Panchbibi Police Station and a case was filed against them.

Following confessional statement of the two Shibir leaders, a team of police launched a drive along with the duo in Awlai union where Jamaat-Shibir men were scheduled to hold a clandestine meeting at a graveyard at about 4:30am, reports United News of Bangladesh.

Sensing the presence of police, the Jamaat-Shibir men who thronged there for the meeting swooped on the law enforcers and tried to snatch away their party associates.

At one stage, police in self-defence opened fire to them and the Shibir men retaliated with firing, triggering a gunfight.

Shibir district president Abu Jar Gifari, its general secretary Omar Ali and Jamaat activist Al Amin were injured as they were caught in the line of fire.

Besides, three policemen, including a sub-inspector, were injured during the gunfight.

Police arrested a local leader of Jamaat named Sijail Islam along with a shutter gun and five sharp weapons.

The injured were taken to Joypurhat District Modern Hospital while the injured policemen were admitted to Panchbibi Upazila Health Complex.
