Meherpur: A suspected robber was beaten to death by local people at Ashrafpur village in Sadar upazila, Meherpur, early on Monday.

The deceased is Ejarul Islam, a resident of Bhabanandapur village of the upazila.

Quoting locals, police said a gang of armed robbers stormed into the house of a Mintu Sheikh of the village breaking the door open at about 2:00am.

The gang looted cash, gold jewelleries and other valuables from the house.

Hearing the scream of the house inmates, local people rushed to the house and chased the robbers.

The robbers also stabbed Harej, son of Mintu Sheikh and his neighbour Rashid when they tried to catch them.

Later, the agitated people managed to catch the gang’s ringleader Erajul and have him a good thrashing, leaving him critically injured.

The Sadar police rescued him and took him to Meherpur General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Ejarul was wanted in several cases including for robbery, murder and extortion, said the police.
