Dinajpur: Miscreants hacked a BNP-backed mayoral candidate of Birampur municipality at Ansar Math in Birampur upazila on Tuesday night, reports local news agency.

The injured mayoral aspirant is Azadul Islam, also incumbent mayor of the municipality.

The Birampur police said miscreants swooped on the BNP-blessed mayoral hopeful Azad while he was returning home after electioneering at about 11:00pm.

They hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him injured, said the police.

Later, he was taken to Birampur Upazila Health Complex.
