Dhaka: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Huq on Thursday urged the government to take necessary steps to stop plying of unfit vehicles in Dhaka city and port city Chittagong.

‘Take steps to stop plying of unfit buses and trucks…you (the authorities concerned) should decide how many buses and trucks would be allowed to run in the country,’ he told a discussion.

Bangladesh Chamber of Industries organised the discussion on ‘Prospects and Challenges of Investment in Industries’ at Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Thursday.

Annisul Huq suggested conducting a countywide survey to identify the number of vehicles plying the country and what categories they fall under.

He also asked the government to formulate regulations so that plying of unfit vehicles could be checked in the country, with the aim of cutting traffic congestion in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said plying of old buses and trucks should be discontinued.

‘We should stop plying old vehicles after a certain period,’ he added.

Energy Adviser to the Prime Minister Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and president of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries AK Azad, among others, spoke at the discussion.
