Dhaka: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested United Hospital employee (brother) Saiful Islam from Airport Railway Station on early hours of Thursday night in connection with the sexual harassment of a female patient.

Tipped off, a team of RAB-1 conducted a drive at the railway station platform and picked him up at about 11:55pm, said sources at RAB headquarters.

According to reports of The Daily Jugantor and Ekattor Television, the female patient was unconscious at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital after an operation and when she regained her senses she found brother Saiful Islam abusing her sexually on 30 November last.

The patient’s husband alleged that he was allowed to meet his wife after 16 hours of the incident.

The hospital authorities sacked Saiful but did not hand him over to police despite her husband’s request, said the report.

On 3 December, the High Court directed the Gulshan Police Station to arrest Saiful Islam and produce him before the court on 7 December.

It had also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why punitive action should not be taken against the United Hospital authorities and the staff.

However, police failed to comply with the HC order.

On 7 December, Gulshan police told the High Court that they had launched a drive but could not find the accused.

Later, the HC asked police to submit a report on 6 January in this regard.
