Kushtia: A young man killed and nine people were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Takimara in Kushtia on Friday noon.

The deceased was Saiful Malitha, 23, son of Sanwar Malitha of the village.

Quoting locals, police said there had been a longstanding dispute between the two groups— one led by former union parishad chairman Shahin Salauddin and the other by Enam Member— over establishing supremacy at the village.

Enam Member’s follower Rahat Ali was killed in a clash in May, 2011.

Tension escalated at the village after the accused in the murder case were released from jail on bail recently.

Following an altercation over the issue, the both groups locked into a fierce clash at about 12:00pm on Friday which left 10 people injured.

Several houses were also vandalised during the clash.

Saiful, a supporter of Salauddin, died on the way to the hospital while the other injured were taken to Kushtia General Hospital.

Additional police have been deployed at the village to fend off further trouble, said Joynul Abedin, additional police super of Kushtia.
