Lakshmipur: Pirates kidnapped two sailors of a cargo ship on the Meghna River near Tankir Bazar in Ramgati upazila on Friday.

The victims are Qamrul Islam, master of the cargo ‘Beauty of Bhagyakul’ and its employee Sukani Jasim, reports UNB.

Police said when the coal-laden cargo ship reached near Tankir Bazar in the river on its way to Chittagong from Dhaka in the morning, a gang of pirates swooped on the consignment and kidnapped Qamrul and Jasim.

It’s been learnt the bandits demanded a good sum of money from the victim’s family members as ransom for their release.

Contacted, Ramgati police officer-in-charge M Iqbal Hossain said they are trying to rescue the victims and arrest the culprits.
