Bogra: A court here on Sunday sent Sramik League leader Tufan Sarkar and Bogra municipality female councillor Marzia Hasan Rumki to jail over the shaving of the heads of a female student and her mother after the rape of the girl allegedly by Tufan.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shyam Sundar Roy passed the order after police produced them before the court seeking five days' remand for each of them.

The court, however, said police can interrogate them at the jail gate within seven days if necessary.

Meanwhile, Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum formed a human chain on the court premises demanding exemplary punishment of Tufan and his associates.

It also urged the lawyers not to provide legal aid to the culprits.

On 17 July, Tufan took the girl to his house at Badurtala in the district town promising to arrange her admission into a local college and raped her there.

When Tufan's wife Asha and her elder sister Rumki came to know the incident, they along with some associates picked up the girl and her mother from their house.

They allegedly beat the girl and her mother with sticks and got cut down the hair of their heads. At one stage, the offenders got their heads shaved done by a barber.

Later, two cases were filed against 10 accused, including Tufan, his wife and Rumki, in this connection.
