Dhaka: Pro-BNP lawyers on Tuesday accused Finance Minister AMA Muhith of committing contempt of court by making a derogatory comment over the Supreme Court verdict which revoked the 16th constitutional amendment.

The lawyers also warned of taking legal action if the minister does not apologise for it within three days.

Talking to reporters after a programme at Sylhet Medical College on Friday, Muhith voiced resentment over the cancellation of the 16th constitutional amendment by the apex court.

"We'll pass this again in parliament. We'll pass this constitutional amendment again, and keep on doing it. Let's see how far the judiciary can go," he said.

Protesting his comment, Supreme Court Bar Association secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon said, "The Finance Minister has committed contempt of court by making comments against the Supreme Court verdict on the 16th constitutional amendment. We would like to ask him to offer an apology within three days for it."

He said Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum has decided to take legal action against the minister if he does not apologise for his remark by three days.

Khokan came up with the comment at BNP's member collection drive inauguration programme arranged by Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum at Supreme Court Bar auditorium.

Speaking at the programme, BNP's law affairs secretary Sanaullah Miah said Muhith has insulted the judiciary with his comment.

He called upon the apex court to issue a warrant for the arrest of Muhith through a suo moto rule.

As journalists sought comment from BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir who was present at the programme as the chief guest about Muhith's comment, he said their party does not give any importance to the Finance Minister's remark. "What should I say about his remarks who used to call everything rubbish?
