50 hurt in a clash at Barguna polling station
Barguna: At least 50 people including police officer-in-charge, presiding officer, journalists were injured in a clash between police and agitated people in a polling station of Barguna municipality on Wednesday morning.
Witnesses and local voters said police suspended the polling at Gagan Memorial Secondary School station as Awami League-blessed candidate Kamrul Ahsan Maharaj’s followers tried to capture the centre for electoral fraud at about 9:00am.
The agitated people hurled stone at the polling station which left 50 injured including Sadar police officer-in-charge Riaz Hossain, presiding officer Manjurul Alam, and private television channel cameraperson SM Sifat.
The law enforcers fired 10 bullets and hurled tear-shells to bring the situation under control.
Additional police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Armed Police Battalion (APB) members were deployed in the area.
Barguna assistant returning officer and Sadar upazila electoral official Mohammad Mostofa Kamal said the voting has been postponed till the situation becomes normal.
However, the Awami League-backed candidate Kamrul Ahsan Moharaj denied the allegation of vote rigging.
