AL-backed candidate among 10 shot in Barguna

Barguna: Ten people including Awami League-endorsed mayoral candidate Kamrul Ahsan Moharaj were shot in electoral violence at Barguna municipality on Wednesday morning.
Witnesses said three injured including Kamrul Ahsan were taken to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College in critical condition while the others were admitted to Barguna General Hospital.
Kamrul Ahsan Moharaj is the district Juba League’s president, and general secretary of district Lawyer Association.
Local Awami League and Juba League leaders and activists said polling agents of Barguna Government Girls’ School left the centre as police mistreated the at about 10:00am.
Kamrul Ahsan declared to boycott the election raising allegation against the administration.
He also formally announced to pull out of the electoral race at a rally in Barguna Press Club premises at about 12:00pm.
Awami League leaders and activists said Kamrul Ahsan went to Barguna Government College polling centre as he has been told that his followers were attacked at the centre.
Kamrul Ahsan and nine AL leaders and activists were injured as police opened fire at the polling centre.
Police claimed Maharaj was injured as someone hurled stone at him.
Assistant election official Mohammad Mostafa Kamal said he heard about the firing incident and suspension of polling in a polling centre.
