Benapole: Imported livestock feed worth Tk 50 crore are rotting at warehouses of Benapole land port as Department of Livestock Services (DLS) issued an order stating that importers must take license and no objection certificate (NOC) before importing any animal feed.

Sources at Benapole land port claimed that the order was issued on July 1 only to Benapole land port.

Motiar Rahman, chairman of the land port subcommittee of Bangladesh-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said animal feed worth Tk 50 crore are rotting at the warehouses for over a month as the importers can not take delivery of the feed that were imported following customs law where license and NOC are not required if importers pay full tax.

Mofizur Rahman Sazan, president of Benapole Customs Clearing & Forwarding Agents Association, said the decision came such a time when crisis of animal feed is acute in the country due to the floods.

‘The livestock department should reconsider its order,’ he added.

Joydev Kumar Singh, Sharsha upazila livestock officer, said license and NOC must be obtained from DLS before bringing any animal feed into the country.

When asked why this order is issued only to Benapole land port, he said they knew nothing in this regard.
