Eid prayer turns deadly as AL factions clash in Chuadanga

Chuadanga: At least 23 people were injured in clashes between the leaders and activists of the two groups of local Awami League over the Eid congregation at Hapania village in Alamdanga upazila on Saturday morning.

Police quoting locals said there had been a long standing dispute between local AL leaders Emdad Member and Mohibul Islam Montu.

Following this dispute the followers of Emdad member and Mohibul Islam locked into an altercation over speeches delivered at Eid congregation.

Later a clash ensued among them and they attacked each other with sharp weapons and bombs. They also exchange bullets, leaving at least 23 people injured.

The injured were admitted to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, Alamdanga Upazila Health Complex and Kushtia General Hospital. Among them, one who was critically injured was referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

Abdul Momen, Additional Superintendent of Chuadanga District police, said police fired four rounds of bullets in the air to bring the situation under control.

Six were held in this connection and additional police personnel were deployed to the area to fend off further clashes, Abdul Momen added.
