2 suspected robbers killed in ‘gunfight’

Two suspected robbers were killed in reported separate gunfights with the law enforcers in Lakshmipur and Tangail in the early hours of Monday.

Lakshmipur:

A listed robber was injured in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and the members of the Detective Branch (DB) in Jafarpur area of Char Shahi union in Sadar upazila of Lakshmipur early on Monday.

The injured is Mehraj Uddin, a listed robber accused in several cases including those for murder and robbery with Sadar and Chandraganj police stations.

Mohammad Abul Basar, officer-in-charge of the DB of Police, said being tipped off that Mehraj and his gang were taking preparations for robbery in the area; a team of the detectives conducted a drive there.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robber gang opened fire at them, prompting them to fire back, triggering a gunfight which continued for about one hour.

The gunfight left Mehraj injured with bullet while other members of his gang managed to escape.

Four police members were also injured during the gunfight.

The injured were taken to Sadar hospital for treatment.

A rifle, an LG and 4 bullets were recovered from the spot.

Tangail:

A suspected robber was killed in a gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Enayetpur area of Tangail early on Monday.

The deceased is Mostafa, a ringleader of a robber gang in the district and accused in several cases including those over robbery, reports local news agency.

On information of robbery attack on the house of an Arjun Kumar, a patrol team of the elite force surrounded the house at about 3:30am, said additional SP Mahiuddin Farooqi, commander of RAB-12.

Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the robbers opened fire at them and hurled two hand bombs towards them, leaving two Rab men injured and prompting them to fire back, triggering a gunfight.

The gunfight left Mostafa dead on the spot.

The law enforcer also detained 10 robbers along with one foreign pistol, 1 magazine, 3 firearms, four locally made sharp weapons and different robbery equipments and goods including cash TK and gold ornaments.

The injured Rab members are lance corporal Zia and constable Najmul.

They were admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital.
