Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Monday said the Rohingyas who have fled to Bangladesh amid persecution in Myanmar are ‘intruders’ as they have not been given refugee status yet.

‘The Bangladesh government has given them shelter temporarily on humanitarian ground. Time will say whether they’ll be given refugee status or not,’ he said, reports the UNB.

The minister came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, at the Secretariat.

During the meeting, the UNHCR representative gave a proposal to provide necessary support, including infrastructural one, if the Rohingyas are relocated to Bhashanchar in Noakhali district, said Maya.

‘The decision to relocate the Rohingyas to Bhashanchar will be taken after the arrival of the Prime Minister but we hope that the Rohingyas will go back to Myanmar,’ he said.

Filippo Grandi assured Bangladesh of providing aid for sanitation, water supply, health and sewerage system in the Rohingya camps, he added.

Besides, the UNHCR will provide Tk 35 crore for the construction of road inside Kutupalang Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar, and the road will be constructed under the management of Bangladesh Army, said the minister.
