Noman accuses govt of doing politics over Rohingya relief

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leader Abdullah Al Noman on Wednesday alleged that the government is doing politics over the distribution of relief among the hapless Rohingyas.

"Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader is distributing relief in Rohingya camps formally with banners. But no leader of ours is being allowed inside the gate. We're asked to hand over the relief to the committee formed with the deputy commissioner as its head," he said.

Speaking at a discussion meeting, Noman, BNP Vice-chairman, also said, "No party, except Awami League, is allowed to carry out the relief activities there as it is doing politics over the issue."

Jatiya Ganotantrik Andolan arranged the programme at National Press Club, marking BNP former standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah's first death anniversary.

Noman, who recently visited the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar, said the government getting isolated from people is trying to make a political gain by doing politics on the Rohingya issue.

He also said the government has so far failed to take effective steps to overcome the Rohingya problem with international support.

The BNP leader said a democratic and pro-people government is necessary to win international support to resolve serious problems like the Rohingya one.

He called upon all to get united to install a pro-people government through a credible and neutral election.

Mentioning that the current government is not willing to hold a fair election enabling people to exercise their right to franchise, Noman said BNP must unite people to put up a strong resistance against Awami League's one-party rule.
