Lakshmipur: A man was beaten to death by local people while allegedly trying to steal valuables, including gold ornaments, from a house at Paschim Angar Para in Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur early on Thursday, reports local news agency.

The deceased was identified as Muslim Miah, a resident of Augankhil village of the upazila.

Quoting local people, police said Muslim entered the house of Bachchu Dewan at the village and tried to steal valuables, including gold ornaments, in the dead of night.

Hearing screams of the house inmates, local people rushed to the spot while the thief attempted to escape.

Later, local people caught him and gave him a severe thrashing, leaving him dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Assistant superintendent of police Nasim Miah confirmed the incident.Muslim was wanted in two cases for stealing, the ASP added Police detained three people for interrogation.
