‘To meet or not to meet is personal matter of CJ’

Dhaka: Acting Chief Justice Mohammad Abdul Wahhab Miah said Chief Justice Surendra Kumar (SK) Sinha is now at his residence. The apex court is concerned about his condition. However, whether he will meet or won’t meet someone is his personal matter.
The acting CJ made the statement while addressing the leaders of Supreme Court Lawyers’ Council at his office room at about 9:15am on Thursday.
Earlier, Supreme Court Lawyers’ Council President Joynal Abedin and other senior lawyers went to the court premises to know condition of SK Sinha. The other lawyers were BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, former caretaker government’s advisor Barrister Moinul Hossain, senior lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, former justice Khademul Islam, former justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, lawyer Shubrata Chowdhury, AJ Mohammad Ali and others.
Joynul Abedin also met with Abdul Wahhab Miah and submitted a written application to him. The letter says, they came to know from news media that Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha went on a one-month leave on health grounds. Later, on 2 October, they went to visit SK Siha at his residence to see him. The CJ said he is doing fine but he cannot meet them at that moment. The lawyers said they are worried about the actual condition of the chief justice.
However, the acting chief justice assured the lawyers by telling them the latest condition of SK Sinha.
The Chief Justice was widely criticised by the ministers and the ruling party leaders for his observations made in the verdict that had annulled the 16th amendment to the Constitution.
On August 1 last, the Supreme Court released the full text of its verdict upholding the High Court verdict that declared illegal the 16th Amendment to the Constitution establishing Parliament's authority to remove Supreme Court judges.
