JUST suspends 7 ‘BCL activists’
Jessore: The authorities of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) have suspended seven students who are reportedly activists of pro-Awami League student body Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on charge of beating up some students of the university.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Regent Board at the conference room of JUST Vice-chancellor Prof Dr M Anwar Hossain with the VC in the chair on Saturday noon, said a press release signed by M Abdur Rashid, public relations officer of the university.
The suspended students are - SM Shamim Hasan and Biplab Kumar Dey of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Department, Tanvir Faysal of Environmental Science and Technology Department, M Al Mamun Simon and M Masudur Rahman Rony of Physical Education and Sports Science Department, and Tanvir Ahmed Tanin and Ashik Khandaker of Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department.
Among the suspended students SM Shamim Hasan is the general secretary and six others are the activists of JUST unit of BCL, the press release said.
The university authorities also formed a five-member probe body with Dr M Nasim Reza, Dean of Health Science Faculty, as the convener to look into the matter and lodge cases against the accused students.
The probe committee has been asked to submit its report within next 10 working days.
On October 5, a group of BCL leaders and activists of the university unit, led by its general secretary Shamim Hasan, carried out an attack on the students of Shaheed Moshiur Rahman Hall.
During the attack, they threw Subrata Biwas, president of the BCL unit of the university, out of the third floor to the ground floor, and beat up the followers of Subrata, alleged the victims.
Later, the injured were admitted to local hospitals.
