Dhaka: Incessant rains, triggered by land depression in the Bay, disrupted the normal life in the city and elsewhere in the country on Friday.

The rains that started from Thursday night continued till filing of the report on Friday afternoon.

The Met Office recorded 50 mm of rainfall in Dhaka in the last 24 hours while it recorded two mm of rainfall from 6:00am to 9:00pm on Friday, said Mizanur Rahman, an assistant meteorologist at Bangladesh Meteorology Department.

Besides, the highest 64 mm of rainfall was recorded in Khepupara of Barisal district during the period, he said.

The Met Office, however, said the rain may continue till Saturday and the weather is likely to improve on Sunday.

Low-income people, especially the day labourers, suffered much as rain disrupted their normal pace of life.

As the day is a holiday, the people preferred to stay inside their residence. Besides, those who were going to appear in the examinations are suffering a lot due to the incessant rainfall.

According to the Met office, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no three due to the depression formed in the Bay.

The depression over coastal Odisha and adjoining area moved Northwestwards and was centred at 6:00am on Friday over Odisha and adjoining area as a land depression.

Under the influence of the land depression the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 1-2 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions during next 24 hours commencing 10:00am on Friday.
