Dhaka: Incessant rains across the country triggered by depression in the Bay disrupted people’s lives in the capital and most parts of the country.

The highest 271 mm rain was recorded in Gopalganj district while 149 mm in the capital during the last 24 hours until 9am on Saturday, Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said, reports the UNB.

Intermittent heavy rains with squally wind may continue until Saturday night the situation may improve slightly on Sunday, he said.

In the capital, private office goers and school students faced trouble in the early morning due to lack of transports and waterlogging in some areas. Many were seen wading through filthy water to reach their destinations.

A major part of the city, including Kawran Bazar, Dhanmondi road-27, Sangsad Bhaban area, Kazipara Farmgate and Malibagh, went under ankle-to-knee-deep water.

‘ Rain is now curse for me as I have to wade through stinky and dirty water to take my son to school when it rains in the city, I don’t know when the authorities will solve the waterlogging problem and we will be freed from the curse,’ said Monwara Begum, a resident of city’s Malibagh area.

Meanwhile maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no three due to the depression formed in the Bay.

The land depression is likely to move in a north/northeasterly direction further and weaken gradually.

During last 24 hours in 100 mm rainfall was recorded in Mymensingh, 137 mm in Chandpur, 103 mm in Hatiya, 139 mm in Ishurdi, 163 mm in Khulna, 123 in Satkhira, 162 mm in Jessore, 186 mm in Barisal and 177 mm in Faridpur.

Under the influence of the land depression the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 1-2 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

Light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country, Met office said in their forecast.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.

UNB Manikganj and Munshiganj correspondents report: over 700 vehicles remained stranded at Paturia-Dauladia ferry ghats since Friday night due to inclement weather, said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation(BIWTC) Aricha sector manager Mohiuddin Rusel.

Beside, 1000 vehicles, most of which are goods-laden truck, were stuck since Friday afternoon at Shimulia-Kawrakandi ferry ghats, said a Shimulia BIWTA official.

In Gazipur, the persistent rains triggered long tailback on Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka- Mymensingh Highways on Saturday morning.

Hundreds of commuters remained stuck on the road from Chandora to Cheragali of Tongi due to traffic gridlock.

The rains also inundated low-lying areas across the country, including those of Bagerhat and Satkhira.

Voicing their anger over waterlogging that has become almost a common phenomenon in the city, people on social media posted photos of public sufferings, slamming the poor drainage system in the capital.
