Govt now friendless over Rohingya issue: BNP

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday said the government has become 'friendless' over the Rohingya issue due to its 'wrong policy' and diplomatic 'failure'.

"We've made complicated an easy and clear issue like the Rohingya one, and the solution to the problem has also turned difficult due to the government's diplomatic failure," he said.

Speaking at a discussion, he further said, "We've been observing that we've now no regional friend to assist us. Even, whom the government has long been calling good friends, they're also not with us as they're supporting Myanmar. So, our position has got weakened as we're now friendless."

Zia Parishad, a pro-BNP platform, organised the discussion on Rohingya crisis at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU).

Khasru, a BNP standing committee member, said Bangladesh position could have been different before the world community had the government carried out strong diplomatic efforts alongside taking a humanitarian approach from the beginning of the Rohingya problem.

He said their party wanted to work together with the government over the Rohingya problem in the interest of the country and its people, but the government refused to do so, taking the issue to a wrong way.

The BNP leader said Rohingya crisis cannot be solved now without creating a national unity and installing an elected and representative government.

He also said democratic values and the rule of law must be ensured in the country to brighten Bangladesh's image globally and make stronger its diplomatic position.

Khasru said Myanmar army has been carrying out genocide against Rohingya after creating a national unity. Even, Aung San Suu Kyi has forgotten she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. "We also need a national unity to overcome the problem."
