Madrasa student tortured to death by police, says principal
Brahmanbaria: Jamia Islamia Yunusia Madrasah Principal Mobarak Ullah claimed that attack on the students was carried out in a plan way and police tortured the student, Hafez Masudur Rahman to death.
Mobarak Ullah during a press conference on Friday morning said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque directed to shut down a mosque and madrasah at Dhanpura in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria on 11 January.
The Qawmi Madrasah Student Union Council brought out procession and staged rally in the Brahmanbaria town protesting at the closure of the madrasa, said the principal.
He said the students came under planned attack at the District Council market in the evening following the procession and rally.
Mobarak Ullah said though the media claimed the riot was broke out centering a mobile phone selling, but it’s not true.
He said police entered into the seminary at about 11:00pm on 11 January and tortured the students, which left Hafez Masudur died on the spot.
Condemning the death of Masud, Mobarak Ullah demanded judicial investigation to find out the original occurrence.
The madrasah authorities criticised the massive vandalism carried out following the death of Masud.
However, the seminary authorities claimed the madrasah students were not involved in the destructive activities.
A total of 11 cases, 10 with Brahmanbaria Sadar Model police and a case with Akhaura Railway police, were filed in connection with attack and sabotage.
A case was filed against some 8,000 people including Brahmanbaria BNP president, secretary general and 44 accused over the incident.
Earlier, on 11 January, a widespread riot broke out in Brahmanbaria town between students of the municipal town’s largest seminary, traders of district council market and activists of Chhatra League, students’ body backed by the ruling Awami League, left at least 20 wounded, including several policemen.
Hafez Masudur Rahman, a resident of Shamantaghar village of Nabinagar upazila, died undergoing treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital early on 12 January after he was injured in the 3-way riot.
