Case filed over stampede in Mohiudin’s qulkhwani

Chittagong: A case has been filed in connection with the death of ten people in a stampede during the qulkhwani of late former Chittagong City Corporation Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.

Arun Das, brother of a victim Jhantu Das, filed the unnatural death case with Chalkbazar police on Monday night, said Nurul Husa, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Besides, the administration suspended the activities of the Rima Convention Centre in the city for investigation.

At least 10 people were killed and 50 others injured in the stampede during the qulkhwani of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury at the convention centre.

On the occasion of Kulkhani, family of Mohiuddin has arranged mezban for 80,000 people at 12 places in the port city, including his Chashma Hill residence in Sholoshahar area on the day, said Mohammad Osman Gani, personal secretary of Mohiuddin Chowdhury.

The other venues for mezban include The King of Chittagong in Panchlaish area, K Square Community Centre at GEC intersection, Kisholoy Community Centre at Chawkbazar, Swiss Park Community Centre in Pancchlaish R/A, Swaronika Community Centre at Love Lane, N Mohammad Convention Hall in Muradpur area, KB Convention Hall at Bakalia, BIP Banquet Community Centre and Sagarika Square at Kazir Dewry and Golden Touch Community Centre in Double Mooring area.

Besides, mezban for people of Hindu Community, Buddhist, Christian and other religions has been arranged at Rima Convention Centre in Jamal Khan area and mezban at Chashma Hill residence only for women, said family sources.

Mohiuddin Chowdhury passed away early Friday at Max Hospital here. He was 73.
