Trade thru Benapole halted over assault on customs officers
Benapole: Import-export activities between Bangladesh and India through the Benapole check post has been stopped from Wednesday night in protest against assault on customs officers allegedly by immigration police.
President of Customs Officers’ Association Nazrul Islam Bangali said immigration police were allowing two Indian citizens to cross the check post without checking their luggage.
Tussle began between customs officers and immigration police as customs officials protested the incident, he said.
Two customs superintendents—Shuvashish Babu and Nazrul Islam, and its three inspectors—Farhad Reza, Mamunul Haque and Iqbal Hossain—got injured during the tussle.
The immigration police also vandalised the customs office, alleged Nazrul.
Protesting the incident, Customs Officers’ Association stopped the export-import activities between the two countries and delivery of all kinds of products thru the check post, he added.
