Diplomats meet Khaleda Zia

Dhaka: A group of diplomats stationed in Dhaka on Tuesday night reiterated their call for an end to continuing violence, recalling their previous statements on recent events in Bangladesh, and those by the UN.
The diplomats, including ambassadors, high commissioners and charge d’ Affaires, made the call after meeting BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office.
They discussed the current events in Bangladesh with the BNP chief, according to a media release issued the Australian High Commission in Dhaka.
The diplomats encouraged confidence-building measures, including the deescalation of Bangladesh’s political conflict, in the interest of fostering safety, stability, growth, human rights and democracy in Bangladesh.
The meeting with the BNP chairperson followed a similar meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Sunday, the release said.
“As friends and partners of Bangladesh, we welcomed the opportunity to meet the BNP Chairperson. We’ll continue to express our common hopes to all sides,” the release added.
The diplomats from the US, Australia, Sweden, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Turkey, Germany and the EU attended the meeting.
The meeting began about 6:35pm and ended at 8:40pm.
