A case has been filed against 12 people, including the officer-in-charge and two sub-inspectors of Nalitabari Police Station in Sherpur, over the death of a young man soon after his release from the custody.

Victim’s brother Nintya Nanda Sarker Subrata filed the case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 on Thursday afternoon, two and half months after the incident, said Advocate Mamtaj Uddin Munna, reports the UNB.

The accused include OC AKM Fashiur Rahman, and SIs Atiar Rahman and Sumon Miah.

The rest of the accused are leaders and activists of Awami League and Jubo League. They were sued for abetting police.

Taking cognisance of the complainant, Judge Md Humayun Kabir ordered Mymensingh Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB) to submit a report on February 28 after investigation.

On October 1 last, police detained mason Biswajit Sarker, 22, from Kacharipara of the upazila headquarters for possessing hemp.

He fell sick after his release from the police custody the same day and died at Nalitabari upazila hospital in the early hours of the following day.

Family members had alleged that Biswajit died due to police torture.
