Brahmanbaria: Two suspected robbers were killed and six policemen were injured in an alleged gunfight between robbers and police at Shahbazpur in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria on early Sunday.

The deceased are Abul Bashar, in his twenties, from Habiganj district, and Enta Dakat alias Wahab, in his thirties, a resident of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila.

Police arrested Bashar and Wahab on Friday night, said officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station Mafizul Islam.

Based on their information, police along with the arrestees went to Shahbazpur to recover gold and cash, robbed by the gang of bandits, on early Sunday, said the OC.

However, sensing the presence of police, other members of the robber gang opened fire towards the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.

Bashar and Wahab caught in the line of fire during the shootout and Bashar died on the spot while Wahab sustained bullet injuries, OC Mafizul added.

Later, police took Wahab to hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Six police personnel, including assistant superintendent of police (Sarail Circle), received injuries during the gun battle.

Police also recovered a pipe gun, two cartridges, two machetes and two spears from the spot.
