DNCC polls stayed for 6 months: EC

Dhaka: The Election Commission on Tuesday said the High Court (HC) has actually stayed the elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), including the by-election to its mayoral post, for six months and the polls to the 18 councillor posts of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) for four months.
Acting secretary to the Election Commission Secretariat Helaluddin Ahmed made the disclosure to journalists after receiving the copy of the HC verdict in this regard.
According to the verdict’s copy collected by the EC, the court stayed the elections to the DNCC, including the by-election to its mayoral post, for six months instead of three months as said earlier, while the elections to 18 DSCC councillor posts for four months, Helaluddin said.
The EC secretary also said they will have the certified copy of the verdict on Wednesday.
On January 17, the High Court stayed the elections to the DNCC, including the by-election to its mayoral post, for three months.
The order came after the hearing on two separate writ petitions filed with the HC seeking stay on the upcoming by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post.
The by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post, including its 18 councillor posts, while that to 18 other councillor posts of the DSCC, were scheduled to be held on February 26.
The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last year.
