Tight security measures taken for BNP human chain

Dhaka: The law enforcers has taken additional security measure across Dhaka as BNP leaders and activists will stage a human chain on Monday protesting the jailing of its chairperson Khaleda Zia in a graft case.
Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said their party leaders and followers will observe the programme from 11:00am to 12:00noon in front of the Jatiya Press Club also demanding the release of Khaleda Zia immediately.
Dhaka Metropolitan police’s Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), water cannons and prison vans were seen in front of the party’s Nayapaltan office at about 9:00am.
Motijheel police addition deputy commissioner (ADC) Arif Hossain told NTV Online the law enforcers have taken extra measures to ensure security of the city dwellers.
On Thursday, Khaleda, a 73-year-old former prime minister, was taken to the old central jail after a special court sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Five other accused in the case, including her son and BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment each.
