PM pays tributes to ex-mayor Jhantu

Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday paid tributes to former parliament member and valiant freedom fighter Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu.

The prime minister paid the homage by placing wreaths on the coffin of Jhantu, also the immediate past mayor of Rangpur City Corporation, at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

After laying the wreaths, she stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Jhantu.

Flanked by senior party leaders, Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, placed another wreath on his coffin on behalf of the party.

AL Advisory Council Member and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip ASM Feroz, State Minister for Jute and Textiles Mirza Azam, AL Organising Secretary BM Mozammel Haque, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap and whips and parliament members of the party were present on the occasion.

Earlier, a namaz-e-janaza of Jhantu was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Ministers, the chief whip, whips, parliament members and the leaders of Awami League and its associate bodies attended the janaza.

A guard of honour was also given to the freedom fighter by a smartly turned out contingent of Bangladesh Police.

Jhantu died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital here on Sunday afternoon at the age of 66.
