Sylhet: A madrasa student was killed and at least 50 people were injured in a clash between Sunni and Wahabi followers over a religious congregation in Dorboste area of Jaintiapur upazila of Sylhet on Monday night.

The deceased is Mozammel Hossain, a student of Haripur Madrasa of the area.

Khan Mohammad Moinul Zakir, officer-in-charge of Jaintiapur Police Station, said two groups of religious ideologies locked into clashes over a congregation around 11:00pm, leaving Mozammel dead on spot and 50 others injured.

Locals said the clash ensued when Wahabi followers reportedly made attack on the religious congregation arranged by Sunni followers.

Later, the sporadic clashes continued between the two groups till early Tuesday, local people added.

They also said that the people of two groups also carried out vandalism and set fire to at least 30 to 40 houses of Kathalbari, Aambari and Jhingabari villages of the area.

The agitated people who joined congregation also blocked the Sylhet-Tamabil Road for four hours, creating huge traffic jam on both sides of the busy road.

On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control around 2am, said the OC.

Of the injured, 20 were admitted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and the rest of them to local clinics.

Additional law enforcers were deployed in the area to fend off further trouble as tense situation is prevailing following the clash.
