Chittagong: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the next general election will expose that Awami League, not BNP, has got politically bankrupt.

Speaking at a rally here, he also alleged that the current government has taken position against the country’s people as it seriously fears them.

‘It’s Awami League, not BNP, has become politically bankrupt. It’ll be exposed which party has got bankrupt if the next polls is held under a neutral administration,’ the BNP leader said.

Chittagong district and city units BNP jointly arranged the rally in front of the party office in the city’s Kazirdewri area demanding the release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, addressed the rally with party city unit president Dr Shahdat Hossain in the chair.

Fakhrul said the government has snatched democracy and people’s all democratic rights, including, voting and freedom of expression ones, to cling to power with its repressive acts.

Describing Khaleda as ‘mother of democracy’, he said the government has put her in jail in a ‘false’ corruption case only to keep her away from politics and next polls.

‘The government is plundering hundreds of crores of taka through corruption. But the government has kept her in jail in a false case of Tk two crore. People will surely come up with a befitting reply to it someday,’ the BNP leader said.

He said the government is not willing to hold the 11th parliamentary polls under a neutral government fearing that it will not be able return to power, reports the UNB.

Fakhrul said they have repeatedly been urging the government to engage in talks to resolve the country’s crisis and hold the next polls in a credible manner. ‘But the government is trying to suppress its opponents with repressive acts instead of taking any initiative for talks.’

He called upon all to get united to restore democracy and people’s rights through a strong movement.
