Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday summoned the Civil Surgeon of Comilla and six other physicians to appear before it on April 4 to place their explanation over a faulty cesarean operation when doctors cut the baby’s head off.

An HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque passed the order in a suo moto move as reports over the incident were published in two vernacular dailies.

Those who were summoned are-Civil Surgeon of Comilla Mujibur Rahman, director of Comilla Medical College and Hospital Dr. Swapan Kumar Adhikari, Dr Nasrin Akter Popy, Dr. Ayesha Afroz, Janiul Haq, Dilruba Sharmin and Karuna Rani Karmaker.

The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the authorities concerned should not be given directives to take stern action against those involved in the incident.

Earlier, in the day, Advocate Asaduzzaman and Segufta Tabassum of Ain o Salish Kendra placed the two daily newspapers before the court attaching reports headlined ‘Physicians beheaded infant while conducting cesarean operation on a woman’.

According to the reports, Julekha Begum, 30, wife of Shafiq Kazi of Muradnagar upazila, was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital with labour pain on March 17.

A five-member medical team, led by Dr Karuna Rani, conducted the C-section on the woman on the following day.

The physicians severed the head of the baby and cut off the uterus of Julekha during the operation, claimed Shafique.

However, the authorities concerned of the hospital said they cut off the head of baby and uterus of the woman for saving the life of the patient.
