The High Court on Wednesday formed a two-member probe committee for reinvestigating a faulty cesarean operation when doctors cut the baby’s head off in Comilla on March 18.

An HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque formed the committee with national Professor Doctor Shahla Khatun, head of gynecology department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), as its head, reports the UNB.

The committee has been asked to submit report within one week.

The court also fixed March 11 for next hearing.

Five physicians, who conducted the operation, were asked to appear before the court during the next hearing.

However, civil surgeon of Comilla and director of Comilla Medical College and Hospital have been exempted from their personal appearance.

Earlier on March 25, the HC in a suo moto move summoned the Civil Surgeon of Comilla and five physicians and two others to appear before it on April 4 (today) over the matter.

Those who were summoned were Civil Surgeon Mujibur Rahman, director of Cumilla Medical College Hospital Dr Swapan Kumar Adhikari, Dr Nasrin Akter Popy, Dr Ayesha Afroz, Janiul Haq, Dilruba Sharmin and Karuna Rani Karmaker.

According to the reports, Julekha Begum, 30, wife of Shafiq Kazi of Muradnagar upazila, was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital with labour pain on March 17.

A five-member medical team, led by Dr Karuna Rani, conducted the C-section on the woman the following day.

The physicians severed the head of the baby and cut off the uterus of Julekha during the operation, claimed Shafique.

However, the hospital authorities said they cut off the head of baby and uterus of the woman for saving the life of the patient.
