JS passes Gazipur Metropolitan Police Bill

Sangsad Bhaban: Parliament on Wednesday passed the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Bill 2018 for the new city corporation.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan moved the bill and it was passed by voice vote.
Earlier in November last, the Cabinet approved the draft law to form the police force for Gazipur metropolitan area.
The proposed law will empower the police force of the metropolitan area to fine up to Tk. 5,000 for violation of laws.
The draft law was framed in light of the existing Sylhet Metropolitan Police Act, 2009 and Barisal Metropolitan Police Act, 2009.
The police members will have to enforce orders of the competent authority, apply full power of the police officers concerned to prevent or resist any possible criminal offence and resist all public nuisances.
In 2013, Gazipur City Corporation was formed with 330 square kilometer areas and some 20 lakh dwellers.
