Top criminal killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

Kushtia: A top criminal was killed in a reported gunfight at Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia in the early hours of Monday claimed police.

Police said the reported gunfight took place at Kalurmath of Pipulbaria on the Daulatpur-Katlamari road in the upazila at about 3:15am.

The law enforcers said the deceased is Altab Hossain, in his thirties, was a top listed criminal. He, a resident of the village of Boalia, was wanted in several criminal cases including murder.

The Daulatpur police Officer-in-charge (OC) Shah Dara Khan said being tipped off that a gang of criminals were at the Kalurmath area, police went there to conduct a drive. Sensing the presence of police, the miscreants opened fire, police also fired back, which triggered a gunfight between them. Altab Hossain received bullet during the gunfight.

Later, police took Altab to Upazila Health Complex, where doctor declared him dead, said the OC.

Police said Daulatpur police sub-inspector (SI) Abdur Razzak, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Arif Hossain, and Constable Hassan Ali were injured during the gunfight.

The law enforcing team also recovered a foreign-made pistol, a bullet, and three machetes from the spot.
