Bangladesh Bar Council polls on Monday

Dhaka: Elections of Bangladesh Bar Council will be held on Monday.
The voting will take place from 10 am to 5 pm at the polling centers of Supreme Court Bar building in all the district civil courts and 12 upazila-level civil courts simultaneously.
Bangladesh Bar Council consists of 14 posts, among then 7 will be elected from the votes of lawyers across the country and other 7 group seats will be elected by the votes of Bar Association members of different districts.
14 from government backed Awami league panel and another 14 from a pro-BNP panel, a total of 28 candidates would participate in the polls.
Seniorlawyer Abdul Baset Majumder was leading the ruling party backed AL lawyers group and AJ Mohammad Ali, former Attorney General (AG) will be leading the BNP backed lawyers.
Incumbent Attorney General as ex officio will lead the Bar Council as chairman and the second man- Vice-Chairman and other members will be elected by the Bar Council polls.
The last date for submitting nomination papers was April 8 and the papers were sorted out on April 15.
The last date for withdrawing candidacy was April 18.
The Bar Council election was held last on August of 2015.
This year more than 43,700 lawyers would cast their votes while every lawyer must carry their National ID and Passport while casting the vote.
Meanwhile, on May 8, a writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) seeking a stay on the Bar Council election.
After the filing of the writ, High Court set May 17 to hear the petition, that is next Sunday.
