Dhaka: BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Tuesday alleged that the government is killing people in crossfires in the name of anti-narcotics drive ignoring the judiciary and the constitution.
Speaking at a discussion, he demanded the government made public a list of notorious drug dealers and take action against those ruling party leaders involved in drug peddling.
‘They (govt) are killing people unlawfully across the country in the name of anti-narcotics drive. Eleven people were killed alone a day. There’re law, judiciary and the constitution to punish the drug traders and addicts, but the government doesn’t care about those,’ the BNP leader observed.
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the comment while speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal, marking BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s 37th death anniversary.
He said the government should put the suspected drug peddlers and addicts before the court instead of killing them in crossfire. ‘Extrajudicial killing can’t be carried out in a civilised country. We strongly condemn such killing.’
The BNP leader questioned as to why the government is not taking action against ‘drug king’ Abdur Rahman Bodi MP of Cox’s Bazar and his cohorts.
He alleged that the government has started the anti-narcotics drive and killing people unlawfully to create panic among people ahead of the national election.
Accusing the government of conspiring to hold another unilateral election by force, Mosharraf urged the people of all walks of life to get united to foil the government’s all evil plans.
He also warned the government that people will not only resist its move to hold a stage-managed election, but also ensure its fall through their united efforts.
