Rangamati: Miscreants shot dead three activists of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) at Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased are Sunil Chakma Sanjit, in his thirties, Atol Chakma, around 30 years old, and Smriti Chakma.

The incident took place at Korollyachhari of Baghaihut in the upazila at about 4:30am.

UPDF Baghaichhari upazila organizer Jewel Chakma said two other Chittagong hill tracts-based political parties—Neo-UPDF (Democratic) and MN Larma-led Jana Sanghati Samity (JSS)—are involved in the killing.

UPDF publicity division Chief Niron Chakma said a gang of armed men of JSS and UPDF (Democratic) attacked on their activists in a residence and shot three of the activists dead on the spot. Niron Chakma also blamed the two parties for the murder.

The Baghaichhari Sajek police Officer-in-charge (OC) Nurul Anwar said he was informed that a gang attacked on a residence and left three people killed on the spot. Members of police and Army went to the spot.

The Rangamati superintendent of police (SP) Alamgir Kabir said three people were shot dead in the upazila.

However, the UPDF (Democratic) spokeperson, Liton Chakma denied the allegation. He said his party is not involved in the incident.

Earlier, on 3 May, Shaktiman Chakma, in his fifties, the chairman of Naniarchar upazila council, was shot to death by some unidentified miscreants at Naniarchar Bazar of Rangamati.

On the next day, 4 May, five people were gunned down and eight others received bullet in an attack by some miscreants at Betchari in Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati. They came under the gun attack while returning from the funeral programme of slain Naniarchar upazila chairman Shaktiman Chakma.
